VI-1
CHILD ABUSE INVESTIGATION POLICY

When the school has been contacted by a state agency authorized to investigate a child abuse complaint the issue of consent must be addressed. The Diocesan school office shall be notified prior to any action being taken.

Upon notification from an authorized agency requesting an interview with a child, the school will proceed to obtain or grant consent for the interview according to the following directives. In the enforcement of this policy, it is the intent of St. Peter Interparish School that any action taken is done in the best interest of the child.

Alleged Perpetrator Is Not An Immediate Family Member

1. If the alleged perpetrator is not an immediate family member, a parent or guardian will be contacted as soon as possible, informed of the pending interview, and asked to give consent for the interview. If the parent or guardian does not grant consent, the school has a right to determine if the interview will be conducted on school property.

2. In the event that the parent or guardian is not able to be reached within a reasonable period of time, the school administrator acting in place of the parent will determine if consent to be interviewed will be granted.

3. A parent, guardian, or school administrator has the right to request to be present for the interview, when such presence is in the best interest of the child. The investigating agency has the authority to determine whether or not such a request will be honored.
Alleged Perpetrator Is An Immediate Family Member

1. If an immediate family member (parent, sibling, etc.) is the suspected abuser, no notification to the parent(s) or guardians of the child will be made. Consent to interview the child will be granted by the school administrator in compliance with state statutes.

2. Only a designate of the official agency will be granted the right to interview a child(ren) after proper identification is provided to the school administrator.

3. So that strict confidentiality may be maintained, no one other than the child and the interviewers will be present during the investigation.
