Extra Curricular Activity
‘Grace’/Suspension Policy
(Grades 5 - 8)

Academics are encouraged at St. Peter Interparish Catholic School and each student is encouraged to do his/her best. Extra curricular activities are encouraged in order to help develop the best talents of each student as well. However, we do hold the right to limit participation in extra curricular activities, sponsored by the school, if a child is having difficulties academically or behaviorally. We encourage parents and guardians to please limit outside activities for students in order for each of them to be adequately prepared mentally, psychologically and physically for the daily rigors of school.

At the beginning of each year all students start in good standing, and the faculty holds high expectations that all student will achieve, succeed, and not be affected by this policy.

ACADEMIC

1. If a student receives an “F” in any subject or a “D” average on a mid-quarter report or quarterly report, he/she is subject to a period of ‘Grace’ or Suspension from any school sponsored extra curricular activity. Dated ‘Grace’/Suspension Warning notices are mailed to the parent or guardian of the student and a copy is given to the student to take home to his/her parent or guardian. Students are allowed one ‘Grace’ period per year. On ‘Grace’ (the warning time) a student may participate in all activities. If a student chooses to be placed on ‘Grace’ for Academics at any point in the year, clears up the problem, and then has a problem again, he/she will automatically be choosing Suspension until the end of the grading period or mid-quarter.

2. Parents or guardians of a student receiving a ‘Grace’/Suspension Warning notice are required to contact the teacher of the class or classes in which the “F’s” or “D’s” have been earned. Parents or guardians are to contact appropriate staff members to develop a PLAN OF ACTION, which states opportunities for the student to raise his/her grade between the issuance of the notice and next evaluation date.

3. If following a ‘Grace’ Warning the student fails to raise the grade one letter grade or bring the average up to “C” within the specified period, the student moves from ‘Grace’ to Suspension.

4. Once Suspension has been reached, the student will be evaluated at the end of the next quarter or mid-quarter. If, at the time of re-evaluation, improvement is not demonstrated, the Suspension continues until the next evaluation. If the student improves, he/she will be off Suspension. If the student has problems later in the year he/she moves automatically to Suspension since the one ‘Grace’ warming was used earlier in the year.

5. The above policy may be adapted with the approval of the Principal, parents, guardians and other appropriate staff members, for students with special learning needs.

6. The administration reserves the right to make a final decision regarding Academic ‘Grace’ or Suspension.

BEHAVIOR

1. Behavior ‘Grace’ or Suspension from extra-curricular activities is reflected through B.I.S.T. procedures.

2. A teacher or administrator will call a parent/guardian to apprise him/her concerning a student whose behavior dictated a move to a “Focus Room”.

3. Normally, ’Focus Room’ phone calls are made by the sending teacher and are considered warnings. Following a third focus room phone call, an administrator will contact the parent/guardian, as this is the point where a ‘Plan of Action’ must be developed and implemented; and the student has chosen to place him/herself on ‘Grace’.

4. The student remains on ‘Grace’ until the ‘Plan of Action’, with a target date, is completed. If the plan is unsuccessful or the student is sent to a ‘Focus Room’ again by any teacher, she/he has placed him/herself on suspension.

5. The student is considered off ‘Grace’/suspension when the ‘Plan of Action’ has been completed successfully. He/she has placed him/herself in good standing and returns to 0 (zero) ‘Focus Room’ notations.

6. If a student requires a “Plan of Action”, completes it successfully, and then later in the year needs a second ‘Plan of Action’, he/she has chosen automatic suspension.

EFFECTED ACTIVITIES

The following extra-curricular activities are sponsored by the school and participation in these activities will be impacted during the period the student is under ‘suspension’ as defined above. Participation in these activities, include games and practices, is not allowed during the period of ‘suspension’.
