A LITTLE ABOUT THE 2010-2011 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Paula Backues

My husband Corey and I were married in September 1997, and went on to have two beautiful children.  Our son Evan was born in 2002 and is currently finishing up Kindergarten at St. Peter, and our daughter Sophia was born in April 2006.  I graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, and enjoyed a wonderful career as a strategic program manager for several years.  When our daughter was born we discovered she came with a little extra gift of a third 21st chromosome (she has Down syndrome), as well as a congenital heart defect.  This caused life to change drastically for us.  We lived in Kansas City at the time, but in 2007 my husband was offered a job opportunity that would bring us to Jefferson City where his family was.  After researching available options for Sophia, we made the move.  As part of that move we joined St. Peter parish, primarily because of the options the Vogelweid Program offered us.  This meant both our children could receive a faith based education at the same school…something that is rare indeed for a Catholic family who has a child with special needs.  When we moved back to JC we also decided I would put my career on hold to focus on both of our children.  This gives me the opportunity to be involved in their schooling, and I love it!  I am privileged to serve on the Home and School board and provide support to the school and its families, as well as the school’s grant committee, whose goal is to find alternative funding for our school.

Sarah Lauf Black

I have been a lifelong member of St. Peters Church and also attended St. Peter School.  I have two daughters.  Hunter Lauf, in fourth grade and Anna Black is four years old and will be attending the new preschool program in the fall.  I am very excited that both girls will have the same Catholic education as me.  We have even shared the same teachers, which is really neat and fun to share our experiences.

As a busy mother, I also find time to contribute to our family business, Lauf Equipment, where I focus in sales and marketing. Both of my girls stay busy with activities from gymnastics to barrel racing and swimming.  I try to find activity time for myself, too including marathon training, tennis, scrapbooking, photography and interior design.  I believe it is important to keep our faith the focus in anything we do.  I have learned so much through my own life experiences that keeping God #1 should always be the first priority.  After that, everything just seems to fall in to place.  When we don’t understand why someone is picking on us, we say a prayer for that person.  Learning to accept the things that are happening in our life to is just as important.  Even when we don’t understand or like what is happening, it is for a greater good.  This helps the girls understand that they don’t HAVE to understand (and me too)!  We just know that God has our plan.

I attended my first Home and School meeting this year on the Love and Logic program.  Not only did I enjoy learning about the Love and Logic program but I realized this is an aspect of my children’s lives I should be involved in.  I enjoy staying involved with my children and their activities.  I have served as room parent for 2 years and co-parent as 2 years.  I also volunteer as lunch duty substitute and in many other school activities.  Serving on the Home and School Executive Committee would be an honor as it would allow me to be further involved in their education, faith and upbringing.

Rachel Farr

I am a lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area.  I attended St. Francis Xavier in Taos for grade school and graduated from Jefferson City High School.  I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting from the Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.  I have worked for the Missouri Gaming Commission for the past 15 years, currently as a Senior Auditor.

I became a member of St. Peter Church shortly after my husband, Bill and I were married in 1996.   Bill & I have a daughter, Katie, in the 2nd grade (2010-2011).  I also have a stepson Justin, who is 22 and a stepdaughter Alex, who graduated from St. Peter’s in 2006.

I am currently the Parent Involvement Chair on the Home & School Executive Committee.  Some of the school activities I have assisted with include:  Home & School Parent Meetings, Mission Party, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/ Son Dinner, Uniform Resale, Book Fair, Room Mother, Summer Blast Off, and Girl Scout Co-Leader.  As our children’s first teachers, we should continue to be role models for our children when they are in school by being involved in their school activities.  I also enjoy crafting and reading, but most of all I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

Pam Fick

I’ve been a resident of Jefferson City for over 20 years.  My husband is Kevin Fick.  Kevin and I have been members of St. Peter parish since 2001.  We have four children: John, 19; who attends Truman State University; Sarah, a junior at Jefferson City High School; Elizabeth, a 1st grader in Mrs. Porting’s class, and Sam, who attends Ms. Surface’s kindergarten AM class.  I graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa with a degree in court reporting in 1988.  I am a Registered Merit Court Reporter working primarily through the firm of Midwest Litigation Services in Jefferson City.  I’ve been a court reporter since moving here in 1988.  Raising our children Catholic, along with enrolling them in a Catholic school, is important to Kevin and me.  Volunteering for activities with St. Peter Parish and school, such as room parent, Christ Renews His Parish, and helping with the White Elephant project, has endeared me even more to our faith and our school.  Having an opportunity to serve the Home and School Association would be an honor.

Angie Gaines

My husband, Bryant, and I have two sons, Zach and Nick, who attend St. Peter School and one daughter, Libby, who is four.  I have been a member of St. Peter Parish since moving to Jefferson City in 2002.  I graduated from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) in 1995 with an M.A. in English and have since pursued a career in the education and training field.  I currently work as a Communications Instructor at Linn State Technical College.  I enjoy reading, traveling and spending time with my family.  I am looking forward to serving as a member of the Home and School Association.

Jennifer Godwin

I have been a lifelong resident of Jefferson City and a member of St. Peter Parish.  After graduating from Jefferson City High School, I attended Southwest Missouri State University where I obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.  On July 21, 2001 I married Sean Godwin, we have since been blessed with four children:  Emilia 6 (1st grade), Kaleb 4 (new pre-school program), Tobyas 2, and Pheona 7 months.  I am currently a Senior Auditor for the Missouri Department of Revenue within the Internal Compliance Bureau.

I enjoy volunteering at the school, by helping in the cafeteria, as the room parent, and other Home and School activities.  I am also the leader of my daughter’s Daisy Girl Scout Troop.  I feel it is good for my children to see that I am involved at the school and their educations.  Other hobbies I enjoy include scrapbooking, baking/cooking, playing and watching sports, and spending time with my family.  I look forward to helping on the Home and School Committee as the oncoming Treasurer.

Terri Haake

I have been a member of St. Peter Parish since 2000.  I am a lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area.  I attended elementary school in Taos at St. Francis Xavier, and graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1987.  I went two years to Linn State Technical College earning my Associate’s Degree in 1989 in Office Technology.  While working full-time for the State and part-time at the YMCA and Capital Region Medical Center, I completed my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Lincoln University in 1996.  I then, enrolled in the graduate program at Lincoln University, and completed my MBA in December 2000.

My husband, Carl and I, were married at St. Peters on July 22, 2000 and have three active boys.  Cameron will be in 4th grade this Fall 2010, Bryce will be in 2nd grade, and our youngest, Zachary, is starting Kindergarten this year.  I work full-time for the MO Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, as a Human Resource Analyst III, maintaining payroll and benefits for approximately 300 employees.  Carl works full-time for the Jefferson City Fire Department as a Firefighter/Driver/EMT and has been a life-long member of St. Peter Parish graduating from Helias High School in 1982.

I believe it is important to be actively involved in my children’s education.  My Catholic education/background and strong family ties have been a great blessing to me.  I feel that being on the Home and School Committee would allow me to be of service to St Peter School and make a positive impact on my children’s education and their future.

Melissa Mallicoat

Although, I was born in Jefferson City, my father was in the Air Force and I have traveled the world.  I have lived in exotic places such as Spain, Singapore, Guam, Hawaii, China, etc.  I graduated from JC in 1996.  My husband, Randy and I were married on October 16, 1999.  I have two wonderful children, Sabastian and Abigail, ages 9 and 8.  My husband, Randy Mallicoat and I have been married for 10 years and last year we renewed our vows at St. Peters. We are very much in love and I knew I would marry him the moment I laid eyes on him.  I have been a stay at home mom since I have had children and believe it is the most awarding gift.  Not only have I been a member of St. Peters church for the last three years but I have served on the Home & School Executive Committee.   In the past few months I have taken on the wonderful responsibility to cook for the priests.  I love it!!!  My husband and I play a very active role in our children’s’ life.  Instilling in them kindness, respect, but most of all, love for others.   I truly believe that God has a plan and his plan for us is to be right here where we belong.  I look forward to another successful year and cannot wait to get to know our new members.  Fasten your seatbelts ladies; you are in for a ride!!!!

Becky Schaefer

I was born and raised in the Jefferson City area and am a lifetime member of St. Peter Parish.  I am married to Steve Schaefer and we have 4 children:  Tyler (4th grade), Emma (1st grade), Layla (2 years), and Levi (brand new).  I attended St. Peter's, Helias, and MU earning a Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences and a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy.  I am a pediatric physical therapist for The Special Learning Center and currently work part time serving children grades K-12 in area school districts.  I especially enjoy spending time with my family as well as baking, cake decorating, and scrapbooking.  I have had a lot of fun lending my time to the Home and School Executive Committee and various activities.  It has been a blessing and a joy to work closely with the faculty and staff and all the wonderful parents of St. Peter School.  I look forward to continuing my service to our school community again this year as the Special Events Chair.

Kathy Smith

My husband, Dan, and I have been members of St. Peter since our wedding in 1995. We have two great kids who attend St. Peter School. Zachary is in 7th grade and Rachel is in 6th grade. I am originally from Michigan and moved here after completing my B.S. degree at Michigan State. After Dan and I married, I had the wonderful opportunity to stay at home with Zachary and Rachel until a few years ago. I have just completed my fourth year of serving the Diocese of Jefferson City. I currently hold the position of bookkeeper. I have assisted with Sunday school and children's liturgy for the past 9 years and am one of Rachel's Girl Scout leaders since her kindergarten year. I can't believe our time at St. Peter School has gone by so quickly and I look forward to 'stepping up to the plate' and being more involved at the school level.

Melissa Wilding

My husband Tim and I have one daughter Grace, who will be in 2nd grade at St. Peter School during the 2010/2011 school year.  My family has been a member of St. Peter Parish since 2002.  We enjoy it immensely and are truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful parish and school!

I currently serve as the Veterans Ombudsman with the Missouri Veterans Commission where I work with Veterans and their families in coordinating access to their benefits and referrals to resources to further assist them.  It is a most rewarding job and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve those who have served us!

Since Grace has enrolled at St. Peter School I have thoroughly enjoyed being as involved as I can be in the school and with the parish.  My family’s membership in this parish has truly been a great blessing for us.  I believe it is important to be a role model for our children in service and giving to others and my volunteer work on the Home and School Committee affords me that opportunity to teach her those skills!
